The Battle of the Books is a yearly competition between schools in St. Johns County.  Due to the large number of elementary schools, we divide the county into the North and South…Julington is in the North.

What does being a part of the Battle of the Books Team entail?

If selected, team members will be given a login specific to them for battlequestions.com where students are expected to practice as many quotes until the March date. This is mostly independent work- at home.  Students can partner up and practice and play games virtually with each other through Battle Questions.

Students will divide up and re-read the books.  All students will be required to re-read the 2 graphic novels and the remaining 13 books will be divided up for students to make sure all of the books have been re-read by March game date.

Team Meetings will be held every Monday and Wednesday mornings starting Tuesday, Jan. 13th, 2025 and ending March 26th, 2025.  Your student only needs to attend one meeting per week, unless they want to attend both.

How is a student selected to be on the Battle of the Books Team?

Selection is mostly based on student scores from the qualification quotes (try out dates are Jan. 6th, 7th, or 8th) along with teacher input and media behavior.  We need team players- students that will bring positivity to the team if the team should miss a question- not place blame or be bummed as this brings the team down.  I hope to have the team selected by Friday, the 10th, should there need to be a part-two qualification that will happen on Friday, the 10th during school.

How many students can be on the JCE Team?

Each school is allowed up to 5 members.  If one of the team members bows out or isn’t practicing on battlequestions.com as much as the others, then an alternate and the student may be asked to switch places. Good Jaguar Character must be continued not only on our Battle team, but also within their homeroom classes.  It is a privilege to be a part of the team. It is also an additional time commitment at home between re-reading books and working on battlequestions.com.

What is the prize and when was the last time Julington won?

Besides bragging rights, students receive a banner for the school to display. We won 2022-2023 school year and Julington Creek’s previous win was 2007-2008 school year, so this year’s win was a great feat!  Here are the past winners from the county site.

Students on the team will also earn a Battle of the Books brag tag and t-shirt to keep.

What happens on the Battle of the Books day?

Our battle is in the morning after your child checks in with their teacher for attendance they’ll come to a classroom and meet with the team.  We’ll join via web and participate virtually. Pictures below from previous years.  Your child will be missing about 2 hours of class time as we participate for a little over an hour and then we eat lunch together as a team to celebrate our hard work and fun.  Students will be responsible for any missed work during this time away from class.

In the past the School District Live Streams it on YouTube so anyone around the world with the link may watch it live or at a later date.  We will have a sign-up for food items to be donated that day.

Will parents be able to come and watch?

Yes, we’ll have a virtual battle and I’ll let you know the room we’re in the morning of Thursday, March 27.
